SALEH MUSHABAH “Fighting electoral fraud and unrest by provincial authorities”

“My name is Mushabah Saleh, I am a lawyer by prefession and a human rights defender (HRD) from Maniema, in the Kindu Province of the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC). I work with the Diocesan Justice and Peace Commission (CDPJ), where I coordinate the monitoring, documentation and reporting (MDR) of human rights violations committed by various actors, including security services, government agencies, mining companies and rebel or vigilante groups in Maniema. The CDPJ also conducts peacebuilding initiatives, promoting peaceful coexistence within Maniema and throughout the DRC.”

“In December 2023, my life was in severe danger after I exposed electoral fraud and unrest orchestrated by the provincial authorities. I received many threats and when I realised how serious the situation was, I reached out to DefendDefenders requesting emergency assistance. They responded promptly, and provided me with critical assistance, enabling me to temporarily relocate to Kinshasa for three months. This meant I was safe and able to continue my vital human rights work.”

“DefendDefenders also trained me in using KoboToolbox, a digital tool for safe and secure data collection. This equipped me with the skill to continue my MDR work, even in the face of significant risks.”

“I returned home stronger than ever, and with a deeper resolve to stand against human rights abuses and violations. I can continue to advocate for justice, accountability and protection of human rights, without fear of any threats I may face.”
