On behalf of the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Network, I would like to thank the Commissioners for their commitment to promoting and protecting the rights contained in the Charter, and to take this opportunity to raise some of the key issues that have affected human rights defenders in the region and their ability to carry out their work over the past six months.

The scheduled reopening of the trial of those accused of murdering Ernest Manirumva, a Burundian human rights defender, is a positive step, said the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project (EHAHRDP) and Protection International today. The public hearing is expected to open at 9 am on Friday 30th March at the Tribunal de Grande Instance de la Mairie de Bujumbura.
44 countries yesterday called on the Government of Eritrea to end its use of arbitrary detention and torture of its citizens. Christian Solidarity Worldwide, Human Rights Concern – Eritrea and the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project welcome this long overdue attention paid to the widespread and systematic human rights violations continuing in Eritrea for over a decade.

EHAHRDP is seeking applications for the role of Advocacy Assistant to fill a vacancy.
The successful candidate will support the work of the Advocacy Programme, reporting to the Advocacy Officer. The Advocacy Assistant should be well-organised, work effectively under pressure and a good team player. The successful candidate must be self-motivated and able to work independently with minimal supervision. They should be willing to travel occasionally, as required.
The East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project wrote to President of the Transitional Federal Government, H.E. Sheikh Sharif Sheikh Ahmed, to urge the Somali government to ensure a timely, independent and impartial investigation into the murder of Hassan Osman Abdi, the director of Shabelle Media Network, and that those responsible are held to account in a fair trial.
