Burundi is at a turning point in its short history as a democratic country. The country’s forthcoming third democratic elections since the end of its long civil war, scheduled for May 2015, are of critical importance to its peaceful development, and are a source of growing concern to many national and international stakeholders.
DefendDefenders details extensively how the relationship between civil society and Burundian state authorities dramatically deteriorated ahead of the April 2015 Presidential elections.

Le projet des Défenseurs des Droits de l’Homme de l’Est et de la Corne de l’Afrique (EHAHRDP), est fier d’avoir complété sa formation d’une semaine: “Claiming Spaces: Outils stratégiques pour défenseurs des droits de l’homme” ce Vendredi 12 Décembre 2014 à Bujumbura. Cet évènement a vu se réunir à Bujumbura des défenseurs des droits de l’homme provenant de chaque coin du pays, et est le quatrième que EHAHRDP organise pour célébrer la Journée Internationale des Droits de l’Homme. Auparavant, l’évènement a eu lieu en Ouganda, en Tanzanie et au Sud Soudan.
The East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project is proud to have completed its one week event, “Claiming Spaces: Tactical Tools for Human Rights Defenders” this Friday 12 December 2014 in Bujumbura, Burundi. The event, which saw human rights defenders from across the country meet in Bujumbura, is the fourth EHAHRDP organises to annually celebrate the International Human Rights Day. It has previously been held in Uganda, Tanzania and South Sudan.
