In a statement delivered during the adoption of Egypt’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva yesterday, the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project, in partnership with the Pan-African Human Rights Defenders Network (PAHRDN) made an oral intervention, highlighting the dramatically deteriorating operating space for human rights defenders and civil society organisations in Egypt. Other human rights organisations, including the International Service for Human Rights (ISHR), the International Federation for Human Rights (FIDH), Article 19, Human Rights Watch, and the Cairo Institute for Human Rights Studies made similar calls for the Egyptian government to change course.
