In a statement delivered during the adoption of Egypt’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) in Geneva yesterday, the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project, in partnership with the Pan-African Human Rights Defenders Network (PAHRDN) made an oral intervention, highlighting the dramatically deteriorating operating space for human rights defenders and civil society organisations in Egypt. Human Rights Council: 28th Session Item 3: Clustered Interactive Dialogue
Hassan Shire Civil Society Speaker East and Horn of Africa
Ahead of Kenya’s Universal Periodic Review (UPR) at the UN Human Rights Council tomorrow, CIVICUS and the East and Horn of Africa Human Rights Defenders Project (EHAHRDP) urge the government to stop its onslaught against civil society and urgently address backsliding on civic freedoms.
The recently concluded 27th Session of the UN Human Rights Council in Geneva, which I attended on behalf of EHAHRDP, saw some encouraging global developments, including the passage of two important Resolutions on the protection of civil society space, and on sexual orientation and gender identity.
Mr Hassan Shire, Exective Director EHAHRDP, delivered an oral statement during the interactive dialogue with Mr. Nyanduga the new Independent Expert on the human rights situation in Somalia.
