Eritrea’s human rights record will be examined in January 2014, at the 18th session of the Universal Periodic Review by other UN member states. Eritrea will declare what actions it has taken to improve its human rights situation and fulfill its human rights obligations. A review of a State is based on a national report prepared by the State under review; a compilation of United Nations information on the State under review prepared by the Office of the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights (OHCHR); and a summary of information submitted by other stakeholders (including civil society actors), also prepared by OHCHR.The UPR process provides for the participation of all relevant stakeholders, including non-governmental organizations (NGOs). Civil society actors can submit information which can be added to the “other stakeholders” report which is considered during the review. EHAHRDP submitted this report in June 2013.

Seventy one African civil society organisations have collectively written to the African Group calling on every African State to live up to their human rights commitments by supporting the draft UN resolution on protecting women human rights defenders, and by taking concrete steps to protect women defenders in their work.
Six international NGOs have written to H.E Abdelaziz Bouteflika, president of the Republic of Algeria, in a joint letter, urging his government to take concrete, visible steps aimed to meet its obligation to “uphold the highest standards in the promotion and protection of human rights,” as set forth in UN General Assembly Resolution 60/251.

The African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR) should order a fact-finding mission to investigate the deaths and detention of hundreds of demonstrators, a group of 11 international and African organizations said in a letter made public today.
11 human rights NGOs have written to the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights to call on them to urgently condemn the excessive and disproportionate use of force against protestors, and restrictions on basic civil and political rights in Sudan.
